Hunder Sand Dunes in LehHunder Sand Dunes are situated in the outer periphery of the village of Hunder. There is a small monastery which is situated right along some distance from the sand dunes. The Hunder Sand Dunes are situated at a distance of some kilometers from Distik Turtuk Highway.
The Sand Dunes are arranged like a huge Eco friendly Park and efforts are being made by the Jammu and Kashmir government to nurture the place and make it into an ecologically sustainable space.
Features of Hunder Sand DunesThe color of sand in Hunder is unlike the sand which is found elsewhere in the deserts of India. The sand of Hunder is pure silver in color and glows with an iridescent edge in the moonlight. Hunder Sand Dunes are miles and miles of exotic silver sands with unusual forms of Cacti and desert shrubs dotting the land in between. Nestling amidst the high sand dunes you will see scores of Bactrian Camels or Double Humped Camels which are peculiar to the desert of Ladakh. The Double Humped Bactrian Camel has two humps and has a peculiar woolly coat covering its whole body.
The Hunder Sand Dunes managing committee which is run by the Jammu and Kashmir Government manages the site well and also organizes night camps and camel safaris for tourists.
Overnight Camps in Hunder Sand DunesThere are climate controlled air conditioned tents with comfortable bed rolls, adjacent wash room and attached barbecue facility in Hunder Sand Dune Park. Tourists can book a tent in advance and then enjoy gazing at the silver sands of Hunder while lying down and listening to music. Evenings are for barbecue parties and there are also desert gypsy costumes found on rent there. Excellent food and drink facilities are arranged for guests. The exotic beauty of Hunder Sand Dune Park makes the stay at overnight camp a wonderful experience. The average cost of a tent for a one night stay is INR 3000 per person.
Central Asia Camel Safari at HunderTourists can also opt for the amazing Central Asia Camel Safari at Hunder. The Two Humped or Bactrian camel will take you around exotic sand dunes and you will be able to see the pristine beauty of the desert. The Hunder Sand Dunes are flanked by majestic mountains at the back and it’s a wonderful sight to see snow capped peaks alongside the white desert. A little further down the Park, the camel will take you to the icy blue Nubra River and you will be struck again by the crystal blue quality of water.
The camel will take you to the very outskirts of the lovely little village called Hunder which is one of the last accessible points of Ladakh.
Timing of Camel Safari is from 9.00 A.M to 12.00 P.M in the morning and 3.00 P.M to 6.00 P.M in the evening.
How to Reach and When to Go to Hunder Sand DunesHunder is about 25 Km from Leh and is about 7 km from Diskit Buddhist Monastery. Hunder is actually the last reachable points for all tourists in India so you might find it a little difficult to reach. The best way to travel is by Jeep. Like all other places in Ladakh its better to visit the sand dunes of Hunder between June to September.
