Panamik Hot Sulphur Springs in Leh

Panamik is a small, isolated yet famous village in the Nubra Valley region located nearly about 150 km away from Leh. Although it is a small village but it is famous for the presence of Hot Sulphur Spring that attracts travelers from almost every part of the world.

Travelers across the world come to dip in the hot water of the spring. Panamik Village cannot be visited without a permit from the District Magistrate’s Office. One gets this, only when there are minimum four travellers.

About Hot Suplhur Springs in Panamik Village

Panamik is the last extreme region to which Indian citizens can get the permission for entrance in Ladakh district. The famous Hot Sulphur Spring is situated in the village of Panamik nearly 11,000 feet above sea level. It is a really astonishing fact that how one gets hot water in such an altitude. This hot spring is believed to have a certain amount of sulphur and is also associated with some local myths. Local people think that when one dips into this water then any sort of illness he is having will be cured. The hot water of this spring contains some medicine and it will cure one from any sort of health issues.

Local people from the Nubra region travel daily to this hot spring for taking a bath and it is believed that they fall ill at a much lower rate. Although this region is free of cost for locals but for tourist local people charge Rs.20 per person in order to enter this hot spring. There are separate large pools for both men and women and these pools are attached with changing rooms. The water of this pool is so hot that people generally cannot stay inside the pool for more than five minutes.

But at least one dip in this pool is recommended for all when they visit Panamik Village in the Nubra Valley region of Leh. Although this water is believed to have cured illness but local doctors suggest that drinking this hot water is injurious to health since it contains high amount of sulphur. Also this pool of hot water is not advisable for infants.

When one visits Panamik Village to watch the magical Hot Sulphur Spring then it is advisable for them to visit Ensa Monastery or Ensa Gompa according to the locals. This is a 250 year old Buddhist monastery. There is a bridge that connects this monastery with Nubra Valley.

Places to Shop near Panamik Hot Sulphur Spring

Panamik Village is famous for its woollen socks and Pashmina shawls that is hand made by the locals. People can get these items at a much cheaper rate than they will get it in the main market. People can also shop for dry fruits like almonds and walnuts which are also available in this village at a much lower rate.

Places to Stay near Panamik Hot Sulphur Spring

If one is expecting a very luxurious stay in Panamik Village then it is a wrong idea altogether. There are no hotels located in this area. Home stays are famous in this region. People get to stay in the local people’s house and they get food and accommodation in the exchange for some money. All the houses have hot water coming from the Hot Sulphur Spring.

How to Reach Panamik Hot Sulphur Springs

The Panamik Hot Sulphur Springs is nearly 150 km away from the Leh City. It’s better to hire a private cab or taxi to reach the Panamik Hot Sulphur Springs as it will take almost 2.5 to 3 hours to reach.

Best Time to Visit Panamik Hot Sulphur Springs

The best time to visit to this place is during the months of June to September. This is the ideal time for visiting Leh and Ladakh. Although Panamik Village is only accessible during the months of summer till August after that this place is closed. A dip in the Hot Sulphur Spring is recommended to people who visit this area at least once.
