About Sindhu Ghat

As the name suggest, Sindhu Ghat is a famous river bank situated in the Leh city. This is mainly located in the village of Shey in the city of Leh. The main attraction of this river bank is none other than the beauty of its location. It is enclosed within mountains and surrounded by lush greenery. The famous Sindhu River is flowing through this area and hence this Ghat is named after this river.


The Indus River is known as Sindhu River by the local people of Leh. An interesting fact about this river is the origin of this river is in India but then it flows to Pakistan. There is a major significance of this river as it is considered as the sacred river of the Country. The river also has a religious meaning and apart from this there exist a communal relationship of the two countries through this river. It is one of the most peaceful places in Leh.

Festival at Sindhu Ghat

A three day famous cultural event takes place in Sindhu Ghat. This famous spring festival is named as “Ladakh Singhey Khabab”. This famous festival is a three day festival which takes place in the month of June on the auspicious occasion of Full moon which is locally named as “Guru Purnima”. This festival is so famous that people from all across the world attend it.



This festival is committed to Sindhu River. The beginning of this festival is marked by fifty Buddhist lamas performing rituals sitting near the river bank. There are cultural events that take place during this festival. Cultural events include dance performance by local people and also include camp fire and other rituals. The festival ends with worshiping the river and local people name this as “Sindhu Pujan” as they worship the Sindhu River.  Apart from this festival Sidhu ghat is also famous for river rafting and other adventure sports surrounding river.

Places to Visit near Sindhu Ghat

When one visits Sindhu Ghat then places like Shey Palace, the Royal Palace of Leh can also be visited since it is in a close proximity to this region. One can take a walk through the Shey village and enjoy the scenic beauty surrounding this village. The Rocky Mountains and the lush green fields neighboring this village can be a treat to the eyes of the travellers.

Best Time to Visit Sindhu Ghat

The best time to visit this area is during the month of June when the annual festival named “Ladakh Singhey Khabab” takes place. You can get to know more about the Buddhist culture and tradition once they witness this festival. You can enjoy the festival thoroughly and involve in the festive mood along with the lamas and the monks. Also you can enjoy the peaceful ambiance of the surroundings. Once Leh and Ladakh are visited then you can easily visit Sindhu Ghat in order to view something extravagant.

How to reach Sindhu Ghat

Leh Airport which is just few km away from Sindhu Ghat can be used as a medium to reach this place. People generally get connected to this place via flights from different cities. There are two highways that connect Leh with several cities. One is the National highway connecting Srinagar via Kargil and the other one is a Leh Manali Highway. It is advisable that people should not take the highway route during winter season since this is covered with snow and hence becomes accident prone area. One can also visit Leh via rail. The nearest railway station that connects Leh is Jammu Railway Station.
