Society in Leh
Leh, the district headquarters of Leh District of Jammu and Kashmir, is one of the remotest places of the world. People living here have to fight with tough terrains, rough climates and other adversities. Earthquakes, landslides, flash floods etc. are common disasters in this region and they destroy people and life in great numbers. Many villages of this region are located in extremely remote areas, welfare societies are working in Leh Ladakh to help these people get basic needs of life so that they become part of a healthy society.
Welfare Societies in Leh
In the year 1971, Social Welfare Department was established in Leh District and since then, the department has been working with an aim to help the orphans, destitute, disabled, women and elderly people. Leh has Child Welfare Society of Ladakh working for the children living below poverty line. This welfare organization was established in the year 1995 so that students of remote regions of Leh and Ladakh get basic facilities like education, food and shelter. They also get opportunities to become part of other sponsorship programs like cloth distribution, courses for English improvement, and winter tuition. Another NGO that has been working for the betterment of children of this region is the “Save the Children (UK)”.
This welfare organization has started operating in this region along with the local government. The organization had provided nutritional supplements to the children of various flood affected villages of Leh Ladakh. Then the organization became part of IDP or Integral Development Project in collaboration with ICCW or Indian Council for Child Welfare and Jammu and Kashmir Council for Child Welfare. A local NGO with the name LNP or Leh Nutrition Project was created for providing right nutrition to the children of Leh Ladakh and help in creating a healthy and strong society.

Women Welfare Society
Disabled and destitute women are provided with different type assistance and they can enjoy the benefits of various schemes that are already offered by the social welfare department of the government at local, state and national level. Women can get vocational training in cutting, tailoring and embroidery along with some stipend every month. These trainings help the women to earn livelihood in future. Women also get protection and legal advices for the when they become victim of domestic, social or any other violence.
Old People Welfare Society
Mahabodhi Karuna Charitable Trust in Leh runs an old age home where elderly people who do not have any place to go or anyone to look after, are given shelter. The old people are taken care of well at this old age home in Leh by the passionate and caring people.Environment Welfare Society
Leh has an NGO working towards the betterment of the environment. Ladakh Environment and Health Organization or LEHO became operational in 1991 on 1st of July. This organization works to resolve health issues of the people living in the area and also aims at integrating the culture and traditions of the villages with the current developments.Another organization named LEDG or Ladakh Ecology Development Group was established in 1983 in both districts Kargil and Leh. The organization aims at promoting different types of sustainable and ecological developments that could have equilibrium with the age old culture of the region. Ecological development along with environment protection is what this organization aims that. Using the renewable energies, organic farming, handicraft development etc. are among the activities of LEDG.
Animal & Wildlife Welfare Society Leh
Wildlife Preservation is an important responsibility of the Wildlife welfare societies working in Leh. Leh has World Wild Life-India working for the conservation of Wetlands of high altitude since 1999. This organization is responsible for taking care of environment conservation and other issues related to construction and development through surveys, researches, communicating with local communities, defense forces, tour operators and others.
Another welfare society for wild life conservation, Snow Leopard Conservancy, was established in 2000. The organization works with an aim of conserving the natural habitat of snow leopard (endangered animal) so that local communities could be benefited. SLC India Trust also works towards eco-tourism, eco cafes, insurance of livestock, predator proofing, handicrafts etc. so that local people have the opportunity of alternate income. Education programs on environment conservation and biodiversity is encouraged among the children and youngsters through various programs.
To take care of disabled, sick and stray dogs, Leh has an animal welfare society named Ladakh Animal Care Society. “LACS” is an NGO in Ladakh, works for the improvement of animal welfare and prevention of cruelty to animals. The organization was established in 2003 at Sabu in Leh. This organization also runs a veterinary hospital to take care of sick and disabled street animals.
